The original submariner black in steel, white gold in blue and steel in green. Will Rolex be able to resist temptation to release new colours as the years go by? There are already yellow and half gold versions. Personally, I hope Rolex resists releasing multicoloured variations as it could in time water down the submariner series (pun intended). The Rolex Submariner has for decades been the touchstone of many watch collectors. Despite the age of the model, it has a very strong following from all over the world. Over the recent years Rolex has updated its sports range to compete with other brands that looked to over take its market share. The redesigned ceramic bezels of the sports range is one such distinct change. However, the new standard Submariner Date in black ceramic in steel had too much in common with the earlier GMT II ceramic to be a new ground breaker. When Rolex released information about its Green Submariner last year, it looked immediately like a winner. Distinct and with a colour that has been associated with Rolex for many decades. On the wrist, this watch is easily recognisable. Fortunately the colour does not look gimicky in the metal as first thought when images were released.  The watch feels a lot less dressier than the GMT II due to the all brushed still finish on its bracelet and the new Glidelock clasp is a wonderful invention to suit any micro changes wrist size due to temperature and weather affects on skin. While the cased is sized at a more modern 40mm, it looks and feel larger than its published dimensions.

Due to the completely different materials used on the bezel and dial, capturing the watch in its correct colour to the eye is very challenging (the lack of anti reflective coating did not help). Most unofficial web images show the dial to be near black or a green darker than the bezel. This is caused by reflections of the metallic dial finish as well as incorrect exposure metering. Here is my "poster" type shot of the watch. As usual, click on it to view it in larger format.

Every so often a watch comes along to inspire me to create more interesting ways to present it. The MB&F HM4 was one such watch and again, just this week the Moser Perpetual Calendar. While this watch is not new - first shown here in 2006 when the prototype was brought here - due to production issues, the Perpetual Calendar started to only ship recently. This beautiful piece belongs to a gentleman collector friend of mine who knew of my desire to re-photograph this rare and aesthetically pleasing perpetual calendar.

Unlike any other mechanical perpetual calendar ever produced, the Moser has a clean dial free of sub dials showing month or year. The small hands at the centre axis points to the numbers that represent the months and its only on the exhibition movement back does one know whether its a leap year or standard year. The date window shows off the date much larger than the usual windows making it easy on the eye. Even the 7 day power reserve indicator on the left does not seem to clutter the dial in any way. Click on the image below to view the high resolution version to appreciate the design details.

I first reported about the HM4 nearly a year ago and back then the watch had made a dramatic impact on the watch collecting world. The watch continues to charm me whenever I photograph it. This time round with a miniature panda designed by the artist Huang Hankang.

As the panda sits precariously on the edge of the watch, I cannot help but to think that the poor panda do face a risk of being knocked off its perch in a moment of carelessness. But then, as an object of art the Panda would unlike find itself out regularly in light of day. The panda can be and will probably bet dismounted from its podracer carriage.

Nevertheless, here it how this dramatic watch looks like on the wrist - as shown by Max Busser himself. Its unmistakeably HM4 but the panda is still quite visible (click on it to see a sharper image).

The panda on the HM4 seems almost like a playful toy appendage for the owner. However, considering that this ONLY WATCH auction is in aid of children suffering from muscular dystrophy, it will be a poignant reminder for the new owner and also a strong positive conversation point. Here is the image in its full glory.

Watch for the desktop wallpaper of this watch in the next blogpost.

The ONLY WATCH 2011 is a charity auction to benefit research into muscular dystrophy in children and this year's event will be held in Monaco on 22nd Sept 2011 with the patronage of Prince Albert II. The auction is held every two years that brings together the top Swiss watchmakers.

For this year's offering from MB&F, Max Busser worked with the artists, Huang Hankang of China. Huang designed a minature Panda bear sitting on the top of the watch with a lead in both its hands as if riding a horse carriage. Having photographed this HM4 with a small panda on it, I am reminded even more than ever of the Star Wars podracers.

Keep an eye out for the next post to see more images of this rare art piece - including a desktop wallpaper for MB&F fans.

Lange & Sohne made a Zeitwerk piece unique for the coming Kidz Horizon Appeal for Chronically Ill Children. The grey dial watch features white arabic numerals on grey background discs.

The annual fund raising is in aid of children suffering from cancer and HIV. The beneficiaries of this fund are the families who are unable to afford the medical care. This watch is called by the organisers as "The Duncan Watch" after the recently departed Mr Duncan Wang (2009). Duncan was a personal friend and an early supporter of my blog who lent me many of his wonderful watches featured here. Duncan had been a strong supporter of the Kidz Horizon Appeal as well as a generous buyer of charity time pieces (for more information about Mr Wang and the Charity - CLICK HERE).

This year's themed costume charity ball for the Kidz Horizon Appeal will once again be held at the 100-table Ritz Carlton Ballroom on August 27th. And the theme for 2011? A Night at the Riviera!

These two are my favourite from the 2011 collection. The 44mm cased DB25QP is a new automatic calibre for the Perpetual Calendar and its famous three dimensional moonphase. While the dial design is familiar, the movement design is new. Click on the images below for the large format.

The DB28T is a tourbillon movement with hand wound twin barrels. It features a now familiar DB floating lugs pivoting at the 9 and 3 o'clock position. The crown is located at the 12 position. The dial consists of black polished stainless steel with the silicon titanium tourbillon positioned at 6.

The dinner showcasing the new 2011 collection from DeBethune was held at the Imperial Treasures Restaurant at the Paragon. Renowned for its Peking Duck, the cuisine was exquisite and thoroughly deserving its reputation for good food and gracious service. Impressive was the food that every course was received and eaten with pleasure. My only complaint would be that the fish was overly boney making it tricky to eat. Peking Duck was indeed quite good and each guest received and much welcomed, multiple helpings. The Here is a montage of the courses served. Click on the image to view it in high resolution.

DeBethune launched the DBM at Basel 2011 - a ultra thin pocket watch encased in a leather bound case for the iPhone 4. The hand wound 6 day pocket watch is a simple two handed watch with a hand guilloched dial but exudes all the expected top quality finishing. The case itself is made of hand finished alligator leather. Priced at a point only the financially well endowed need enquire. The concept of such a piece could spark a lot of copycat cases - as with all things connected to iPhone. CLICK on the image below to view it in full resolution.

The DBM above was photographed at a small dinner party with Mr Pierre Jacques the new CEO of DeBethune and Mr Alsessandro Zanneta (Sales Director) who are travelling around the globe visiting their authorised dealers with the new watches. Before the dinner itself, I was able to photograph the new DB28T and DB25QP. Images of these wonderful pieces as well as the dinner party will follow soon.

Meanwhile, here is an image of Mr Jacques CEO DeBethune using his iPhone with the new DBM cover.
