Dr Bernard Cheong a renowned Singaporean collector and columnist for many watch related magazines in the region was recently accorded the recognition of Ambassador by the Fondation De La Horlogerie in Switzerland. His appointment comes as a surprise to many as the Fondation had not given such recognition to anyone in the East before. To many in our part of the world, Dr Cheong had been commonly viewed as the Ambassador of watch collection here in Singapore for many years for his unselfish efforts to bring a higher level of sophistication to our part of the world. For those who have known him and enjoyed his never ending string of stories and information on the world of horology would easily confirm that this recognition is well deserved.

Dickson and Chopard Singapore hosted a Chinese New Year cocktail for friends and collectors of Chopard. It was a great intimate evening of a group of collectors with a varied taste for the watches they collect - at the Dickson Knightsbridge boutique. There are many cliques of collectors in Singapore and I am honoured to be counted amongst this group of close collector friends. At the evening, Chopard showed the collection of watches from the 2010 launch and we all enjoyed at our leisure trying out the past and current collection of LUC watches. Check out if you like the last featured watch -  many at the cocktail was excited to see it and even more are hoping to see a steel version of this Chopard with a LUC 1.96 or 9.96 variant in this case design.

Malmaison the new uber luxury boutique - stems from the ideas of Mr Michael Tay of the Hour Glass. Located at the Knightsbridge along Orchard Road, it opened its doors recently to friends and clients even though some of its displays are still yet to be filled. The world's top handmade luxury goods from all over the world is taking their time to arrive at this beautifully designed store that spreads over two very large floors.

The store features not just the very best and select luxury time pieces- it also show cases a private collection of rarified Rolexes ever to be publicly shown. This includes the COMEX submariner and the complete variations of the Steve McQueen Daytonas. Also sold at the store are gentleman's desires like rare wood walking sticks, hand made perfume, jewellery and interesting collectibles.

The Pierre Corthay shoes caught my eye at the foot of the stairs to the upper floor. These beautifully handmade shoes are made from leather finished in a manner that changes tone in different light. More photos of the Malmaison and its varied luxury goods to follow.

Collectors never really need a reason for a gathering but Chinese New Year celebrations is always a popular time of the year to meet up and have a feast. Its very much the culture here in our region.

This time round, so soon after the post Christmas gathering, it was suggested that we gathered this time to enjoy a renowned Chinese restaurant called Restaurant Ten. We reserved seating for 30 and everyone truly enjoyed the unusual culinary offerings. Well worth revisiting again.

At this gathering, it was also suggested that anyone who owned a Portuguese Jubilee to bring along as one of the collectors had just taken delivery of a piece purchased direct from a Swiss dealer. To our surprise, we have in a group of 30 collectors, three rose gold Jubilees and two steel versions.  There were other Portugueses as well but as the table photograph shows, the taste of collectors is truly varied. Close study of the image above (Click to view large version) will show that Seiko and Rolex are the next predominant brands. Also seen are some very rare and truly special timepieces as well. See if you can identify them!
