The Business Times has succeeded again to publish a watch supplement that rivals any top watch magazine release covering breaking news as well as latest developments and views of the worldwide horological scene. Published annually on the last Friday of August - the supplement has become a mainstay with local collectors making that edition of the Business Times one of the most sort after daily paper of the year.

This year's supplement is almost bursting at the seams covering all levels of interest for the watch collector. Larry Wee the editor of the Watch Supplement worked with both Su Jia Xian and myself on a number of articles in this year's supplement. While SJX was featured as having contrbiuted several wonderful articles, my contribution was my images in a few articles as well as an article where I shared the year's most important contemporary watches that I photographed.
Click on the image above to see the complete list of articles published in the supplement. You can read my article from the link HERE (but accessible only after office hours Singapore time).

The Nomos is a classic looking German watch with some pedigree. The watch house Nomos does not have many watch models in its line up but this round white dial automatic has been around for some time albeit in different case sizes with the current much more closer to the more popular 40mm.

While it is not considered to be in the top tier in luxury watches it is nevertheless a good quality timepiece, well made and reasonably finished automatic movement - with a hint of Brauhaus design influence.

At this price point, I think this is a watch that novices with a penchant for classic design would like. I personally think that this watch epitomises the German watch making tradition. No nonsense, efficient, classical, honestly priced and can be worn for all occasions. Lets hope the brand and its retailers are able to resist the temptation to hike up prices as most brands have done in 2007/8.

My thanks and appreciation to my friend and fellow collector Mr Eddie Sng for allowing me to photograph his Nomos.

Last week Mr Martin Wehrli of AP was in town to give a presentation on the history and the current horological developments at the AP manufacture. Held at the plush and cosy Sincere Watch Academy premises at Suntec City, we were treated to an astonishing array of developments to look forward to in the near future.
From the video below you will find two very important timepieces. One a working prototype with double hairspring (with non working date) on which AP is currently perfecting (a very high beat balance wheel) and the other a petite Grande Sonnerie with pearl dial.
If you wish to learn more of what happened that evening, a good friend of mine Mr Zach Toh, moderator of Horomundi filed a detailed report HERE. I highly recommend visiting the thread to see the slides shown by Mr Wehrli.

The image above is of the prototype model of the Bulgari Calibro 303 for Sincere Watch. I was kindly given permission to photograph this non-working model and found it to be reasonably handsome watch overall and surprisingly easy on the eye when its worn on the wrist.
Clearly one cannot guage the quality of the final production piece by the prototype but judging the overal layout of the dial, the details and case, I suspect that fans of sports chronographs will be excited by this piece. In particular the Hublot Big Bang collectors. While there is no resemblance between the two, I think the market positioning is similar.
For collectors who are attracted to this watch, rush to your favourite Sincere retail outlet as there will only be 100 available.

Postscript - Bernard Cheong posted on the Purists a comparison of the LE and the Calibro he owns on this LINK.

The regional authorised dealers of Bell & Ross - FJ Benjamin has announced that they will be launching a Member's Club in Singapore and Malaysia to harness the momentum of the growing number of collectors for the brand.

The club will have its first physical facility at the Mandarin Hotel along Orchard Road, Singapore. Apart from provision of exclusive benefits the club members are expected to enjoy several launch parties and events each year including nightlife events at the local St James Powerstation.
Interestingly, there will not be any cost for membership apart from being an owner of a Bell & Ross watch. For more information about this club, read the report from two of Bell & Ross ambassadors - Tay Kok Choon and Bernard Cheong.
If the parties are going to be as fun as the one I reported here - I am sure there will be many new owners joining the club.

Bernhard Lederer
Bernhard Lederer, an AHCI independent master watchmaker has finally entered the Asian market through a collaboration of local regional retailers. In Singapore, he is represented by Dickson Watch. Just last week Dickson Watch held a small dinner with a few guests to celebrate the new venture. Bernhard Lederer brought with him his complete collection including two watches that took my attention. The MT3 Tourbillon and Open Planet.
My good friend and fellow collector Mr Tay Kok Choon managed to photograph his collection earlier and also covered the dinner and I would recommend visiting this LINK to read his report on BLU or Bernhard Lederer Universe new watches.
I have been invited to photograph the MT3 and other BLU watches and I hope to have them up here by next week, so do come back soon to see them.

Edipresse the regional press organisation will be organising the Asian edition of the annual Grand Prix d’ Horlogerie to be held in Singapore this year. The annual awards gala dinner is usually held in Switzerland but this year the Grand Prix d' Horologerie decided to host an Asia gala as well to recognise amongst other things the importance of Asia to the Swiss watch industry.
The event will take place on 30th Sept 2008 at the Four Seasons Ballroom, and will be preceded by three days of public exhibition of the 70 watches that are nominated for this year’s Grand Prix in Geneva. There will be a separate panel of judges from Asia that will decide on the following categories of watches:
- Best mens
- Best ladies
- Best Jewelry
- Best Complication
- Best Collector's choice
More information about the event will be posted here as it is received. Meanwhile here are links to the reports on the 2007 event.

While I am not a big fan of Mickey Mouse watches, I thought that this new watch that Genta just released - a Mickey Racing Limited Edition - to comemmorate the first ever night Formula One night race to be held here in Singapore in September, would be a real collector's piece.
In stainless steel, only 50 will be made and the jumping hour retrograde minute features Mickey wearing a racing suit with helmet in hand. The watch will come with a silicone rubber as well as a black calf with red trimming strap. The watch clearly is intended to bring homage to the first Singapore Formula racing with a red Merlion - the icon symbol of Singapore - at the top of the dial.
