Sarpaneva Supernova

Following the earlier Sarpaneva Loiste II, I was invited to photograph the latest prototype Sarpaneva - The Supernova. This watch will be limited to only 10 pieces and will be launched in Basel 2007. Unlike the Loiste which was small at only 38mm in diameter, the Supernova is 40mm. Its modified ETA automatic movement will include moonphase, subseconds dial at 8pm and date window at 4pm. The dial and case design is distinctively Sarpaneva.
If this watch intrigues you as it did me, have a look at my photomontage presentation of images I took of this new model. CLICK HERE.

  1. Dear Harry,

congratulations on your photomontage of Stepan Sarpaneva’s “Supernova”, ahead of Basel 2007.

As usual, your photography has captured the distinctive design of a watchmaker: in this particular watch, where the overall sturdy look of the brushed metal is in contrast with the smooth polished semi-circular indentations around the case.

I’m glad to see that Stepan has integrated into the “Supernova” the spiral see-through back which provides a teasing view into the mechanism of the watch. He has used this original spiral design in a previous model, and in the automatic version, this gave a fantastic impression of animation, something like looking through a moving kaleidoscope, when the watch is rotated and the oscillating mass of the automatic winding mechanism is set in motion.

I think this spiral back design is a potential prize-winner (by the way, I had detailed it in my article about “Stepan Sarpaneva, watchmaker in Helsinki” in November 2006, which can be viewed on my blog (http://serenidee.over-blog.com/article-4518641.html).

    Thank you.
